The NWH Group appoint Saltire Scholars to deliver major business improvement initiatives

We have doubled our commitment to scholarship and development and appointed two internships through Entrepreneurial Scotland’s Saltire Scholarship Programme.

Blair Inglis (21, from Glasgow) who is studying for an BSc (Hons) in Maths, Statistics, Business Analysis and Technology at the University of Strathclyde, will be taking on a sustainability project that is integral to the company’s carbon reduction programme. He will monitor and measure consumption of utilities throughout all parts of the business, and formulate an action plan to reduce consumption whilst maintaining all levels of business continuity.

Blair said: “The Saltire Scholarship programme is a brilliant way to gain in insight to the real world of work. I was drawn to this opportunity at NWH as the waste management sector is fast-growing, so its great to be part of a really dynamic industry whilst building my experience in data analytics. This will undoubtedly help my future career prospects.”

Jake Mitchell (22, from Edinburgh) is studying a MEng in Chemical Engineering at University of Strathclyde, and will be focused on a plant asset registering project as part of the business’ programme of continuous improvement. Taking into account all recycling process plant throughout the entire business, with a focus on major operations in Leith, Newcastle and Mayfield sites, Jake will be documenting maintenance schedules and creating a plan to pro-actively improve the efficiency of waste processing machinery and mechanical operations.

Jake added: “The experience so far is really positive and it’s providing me with a real insight to a career in process engineering, so I’m thankful for the opportunity to gain real-life industry experience.” 

This is the second year running that we have supported this programme. Having successfully taken on a marketing intern last year, the team has doubled its in-take and committed to two technical project roles in the operations department for 2022.

Both interns were selected through a highly competitive selection process and will be with us for three months until they return to university in the autumn.

Last year, The NWH Group donated £10,000 to Entrepreneurial Scotland’s #FundTheFuture campaign and this continued support of the Saltire Scholarship programme cements the waste recycler’s commitment to creating sustainable careers.
