On our mission to eliminate waste we provide waste collection services to the Leisure, Retail and construction industries. Collecting waste with our fleet of Trade Refuse, Skip, Tipper, Grab and Walking Floor articulated vehicles, transporting materials to our Material recycling facilities where we produce a valuable product such as cardboard, Paper, Washed sands, Biomass for energy and animal bedding.

We are now recruiting for an Employee Relations Officer to join the Human Resources Department at our Head Office in Dalkeith. This position will focus on creating and delivering people practices which develop and maintain positive working relationships between the organisation and its people. Working closely to engage with NWH employees of all level throughout the business, the Employee Relations Officer will act as a liaison to provide both support and insights in the NWH employee experience.

This is a full-time position, working on average 40 hours per week, but due to the nature of the role, working hours may vary between early starts and late finishes due to the nature of our business. In addition, travel to our other sites in Dumfries, Glasgow, Dundee and Newcastle will be a requirement, so the ability to drive is essential.

This position will pay a salary ranging from £26,000 - £32,000 per annum.

Main Job Activities of the Employee Relations Officer:

  • Development of effective employee relations procedures
  • Ensuring company policies and values are promoted and used fairly throughout the business, and where necessary investigate and support managers in investigations and resolutions.
  • Providing Employee Relations support to employees of all levels, through all areas and departments of the business
  • Identify trends from issues raised and create solutions to resolve them
  • Being a point of contact for employees to reach out to for concerns in their employment, or any other matters they do not wish to raise with their line manager
  • Involvement with employee Appraisals and regular feedback meetings
  • Develop relationships with line managers across the business, and gain an overall understanding of challenges faced from both office based and off-site employees
  • Coaching and advising managers in dealing with employee relations situations
  • Support Learning and Development throughout the business

·        Wider HR involvement such as TUPE, Absence Management, Disciplinaries, Grievances, Onboarding Induction, Maternity, Performance Management and ad-hoc admin tasks.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required

The ideal candidate will have:


  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent in a relevant field


Skills and knowledge

  • Previous experience in handling Employee Relations related cases within a large organisation
  • Ability to manage, organise and prioritise numerous objectives or activities simultaneously
  • Ability to operate independently and using own initiative
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • A strong knowledge of UK Employment Law
  • Confident counselling and advisory skills with influencing techniques
  • Ability to deal with ER matters in a confidential manner
  • Client focused providing excellent customer service
  • High level of professionalism
  • Previous experience working with HGV Drivers or in a logistics organisation would be beneficial
